Guide
Choose one of 70 individual women's and men's world records in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly or individual medley and compare your time, pace, speed and virtual distance.
Your time is compared with the selected record for exactly the same stroke, distance, gender category and pool length. The time gap is your time minus the record time. Average speed is race distance divided by total time and is shown in metres per second and kilometres per hour. The speed ratio compares your whole-race average with the record average.
Average pace per 50m divides total time by the number of 50m sections. It is not an official split. Starts, underwater phases, turns, pacing and fatigue can make real split times substantially different.
The catalogue covers the 70 individual world records recognised by World Aquatics for women and men. It includes 50m, 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle; 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly; and 200m and 400m individual medley in both 50m long-course and 25m short-course pools. The 100m individual medley is an official world-record event only in a 25m short-course pool.
Long-course and short-course marks are not interchangeable. A 25m pool has more turns and wall push-offs over the same distance. The record picker therefore separates pool, stroke, gender and distance.
A relay record is the combined performance of a team, not one swimmer's personal time. Team order, exchanges and every leg contribute to the final mark. Because this calculator is designed for personal-time comparisons, 4×50m, 4×100m and 4×200m relay records are excluded from the 70 individual entries.
If more than one swimmer or official performance shares the same record mark, the co-holders are presented together under one event and the shared time is used for comparison. Virtual distance multiplies your average speed by the record time. It represents cumulative distance covered when the record holder finishes, not your physical position in the pool after turns.
Charts show whole-race averages and linear time milestones. They do not separately model reaction time, the dive, underwater phases, turns, stroke efficiency, pacing or fatigue. Milestones are not a training plan, prediction or guarantee.
The catalogue is checked through the World Aquatics swimming records portal with pool and gender filters. Each entry stores an official identifier, mark, swimmer or co-holders, meet, date, place, source parameters and last verification date. Entering a faster time cannot certify a record; timing, pool specifications, competition rules, eligibility and ratification require official verification.
High-effort swimming can carry health risks. Use an appropriate supervised pool, do not attempt a limit swim alone and seek professional advice if you have a health concern.
